Once
their authenticity is established, paintings, scultpures, drawings, prints,
and photographs are classified by category. Since the 18th century, art historians
have classified works first according to cultural and geographic provenance,
then by medium, and finally by date of execution and artist's name. This system
of classification enables specialists to observe the evolution of art. Among
galleries classifying their collections according to these principles is the
MacKenzie Art Gallery.
